Filottrano, a hilly town in the inland of Le Marche, dates back to the Middle Ages, yet populated since long before: the oldest remains reveal the presence of a hut civilization of the third millennium a.c. in the towns of Ripabianca and Codarda, though the town also preserves remains of medieval walls, a church of the 17th century and an 18th century parish church.
The city folklore, rooted in the customs and traditions of farmers, is generation after generation transmitted with dances and motifs. The yearly Festival of Threshing is an evocative event of the work in the fields and it is accompanied by tasting of typical dishes of the country cuisine.
During the Christmas season Filottrano becomes "City of Nativity " with re-enactments, nativity scenes placed in characteristic locations of the historic centre, an exhibition of Mini Nativity Scenes and the permanent historical crib in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Every year for the past 30 and more years on the first Sunday of August, it is held the historical re-enactment of the Contest of the Boot. For the entire duration of the event there are music performances and medieval jesters, costume parades, medieval games, a battle camp, themed menus taverns, flag weavers and drummers and much more.
